A basic safety standard has been introduced for recreational skippers to ensure the safety on waterways of Western Australian. The department for Planning & Infrastructure who are responsible for marine safety in Western Australia, has enforced that people in charge of vessels have the minimum skills and knowledge to protect the safety of themselves,  the passengers and to ensure that the waterway is safely shared with other vessels. In Western Australia, drivers of boats and yachts fitted with motors greater than 6hp must hold a skippers ticket.
